Essential facts

Onomastica is an annual journal devoted to proper names, published by the Institute of Polish Language, Polish Academy of Sciences. It has appeared continuously since 1955. It used to be edited by such eminent Polish linguists as Witold Taszycki, Mieczysław Karaś, Kazimierz Rymut, Aleksandra Cieślikowa, and Barbara Czopek-Kopciuch, Urszula Bijak. Its editor-in-chief is currently Halszka Górny. The journal is internationally renowned and its editors cooperate on a permanent basis with universities abroad and with periodicals of similar profile.
The history of the journal until 2005 can be found in the article by Kazimierz Rymut Pięćdziesięciolecie „Onomastików” [Fifty years of Onomastica], Onomastica, vol. 50, 2005, pp. 5–9.
In the article Jak onomaści piszą o onomastyce i o sobie [How onomasticians write about onomastics and about themselves], Onomastica, vol. 50, 2005, pp. 49–68, Katarzyna Skowronek analyses the scholarly discourse in the journal.

From 2019 (issue 63), the original version of the journal is the electronic version, and each article has a DOI number. Full texts of articles with abstracts and keywords are published on the journal's website. A paper version of the journal is also published.

The Editors invite Authors to submit original theoretical, data-driven or overview articles, book reviews, notes, and reports concerning proper names in all their aspects and varieties.

Onomastica is listed on the list of scientific journals of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (70points).

The journal is a member of COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) and subscribes to its principles.
